The National Infusion Collaborative (NIC) is excited to announce that the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has joined Purdue University, ASHP, and a growing network of healthcare institutions dedicated to advancing the standards and practices of infusion therapy nationwide. This partnership reflects NIC's commitment to building a robust and diverse community of leaders in infusion care, working together to enhance patient outcomes and clinical excellence.

Smart infusion pumps are widely regarded as a standard of care to reduce infusion-related medication errors. They allow for a greater level of control, accuracy, and precision with drug delivery, and are designed to provide users with decision support for programmed doses and infusion rates to identify errors before medications or fluids are infused.

Bainbridge Health launched the NIC in 2022, in partnership with Purdue University’s Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, to advance the safety and stewardship of intravenous medication use. As a member organization, ASHP will work alongside leaders from Purdue University’s Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering and Bainbridge Health to further advance the NIC.

Bainbridge Health's Sean O'Neill, PharmD and Joanne Hatfield, PharmD, BCPS shared data from our vast network of hospitals to review types of good catches detected by smart infusion pumps, trends in good catch data, including medication examples, strategies to enhance patient safety through library build.

Smart infusion pumps in health systems across the United States has become a best practice. 

Although challenges to implementation may exist, bidirectional integration of smart infusion pumps with an electronic health record, also known as interoperability, can offer an additional layer of patient safety.  

Best practice is to implement upper and lower hard limits when developing a smart infusion pump drug library. Healthcare systems report challenges in determining appropriate hard limits, especially for continuously infused medications, due to wide variability in dosing.

By reviewing trends in programming and network benchmarking data, healthcare systems can implement upper hard dose limits with confidence.
